Most cases of hemorrhoids can be managed through proper diet, easy bowel movements, and treating symptoms with over the counter ointments. There are a number of different hemorrhoids treatments that can be used to manage this problem. Some can be done in the doctor’s office while other requires little or no aftercare. In general, these are used to treat minor cases. They include banding, sclerotherapy and coagulation therapy.

In most cases that require surgical intervention – hemorrhoidectomy is necessary. This procedure is conducted at a surgical center or hospital and anesthesia are used. While some doctors prefer using general anesthesia or intravenous sedation others prefer using regional or local anesthesia in conjunction with a sedative that allows you to relax during the procedure. During this surgery, the doctor removes the hemorrhoids by cutting them out. Afterwards, the patient is kept in observation until the time he/she awakes and the vital signs get stabilized.

Once you are discharged, how to manage the pain?

After the hemorrhoid removal procedure has been conducted, with each passing day the patient starts feeling better. You might experience some pain for at least two weeks or so. However, on the basis of your own needs and what doctor recommends you, you might be prescribed a different pain management plan.

Post-surgery, some doctors prescribe painkillers. It is important to follow all of the dosing instructions carefully and take the medicines exactly as told. Even after the initial pain fades, many people have pain during or after bowel movements for a month to six weeks after surgery. To help numb this pain, the doctor will prescribe you a cream.

Aftercare is must..

Along with pain medication, you can also go for sitz baths to help relive off the pain associated with hemorrhoid surgery. This consists of sitting in a few inches of water for up to half an hour three or four times a day. The warm water will not only clean the anal area, as well as relax the muscles ease off the pain. You can continue with this routine till the time you feel post-surgical pain.

When can you return to work?

Most people only miss a week or ten days of work after they have undergone hemorrhoid surgery. They can return back to their normal routine within two weeks. Of course, this completely varies from job to job and how active you are in your free time. Until your body has fully healed, you should avoid heavy lifting or exercise after hemorrhoid surgery. This may take four to six weeks.

Can you stop your hemorrhoids from coming back?

Although it will take around 14 days to get back to your normal life, hemorrhoidectomy procedure ought not to be repeated. However, there is always the risk of a recurrence of hemorrhoids. This can be true in the case if you kept on following the same dietary and bathroom habits that you followed before surgery.
